The Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) is a standardized admissions test used by many private schools, developed by the Educational Records Bureau (ERB). It measures a student's academic readiness across five sections and is offered at four levels by entry grade. It is one important piece of the application, not the whole picture, alongside grades, recommendations, interviews, and fit.
If you are applying to an independent or private school, you have probably heard about the ISEE. For many families it is one of the first unfamiliar steps in the admissions process, and one of the most misunderstood. The exam helps schools evaluate academic readiness while providing a common measure across applicants from very different educational backgrounds.
The ISEE assesses the academic skills and reasoning students are expected to use in a rigorous classroom. It has five sections:
The ISEE is offered at four levels based on the grade a student is entering, not their current grade.
| ISEE Level | Students Entering |
|---|---|
| Primary | Grades 2–4 |
| Lower | Grades 5–6 |
| Middle | Grades 7–8 |
| Upper | Grades 9–12 |
For more detail, see Who Takes the ISEE.
Why do private schools require the ISEE?
Applicants come from public, private, charter, homeschool, and international backgrounds with different grading systems. The ISEE gives committees one standardized measure to evaluate applicants consistently.
Does every private school require the ISEE?
No. Some require the ISEE, some the SSAT, some accept either, and some have their own assessment or are test-optional. Confirm each school's requirement before registering.
Is the ISEE difficult?
It is designed for academically challenging schools, so many students find it demanding. The better question is whether a student is adequately prepared for its expectations.
Is preparation necessary?
It depends on the student. Some need only to learn the format; others benefit from strengthening skills first. The right plan depends on the child, the target schools, and the timeline.
